The Congress on Discipleship is an outgrowth of the African American (AFAM) staff development conference that dates back to 2002. Prior to 2002 the ministry was led by Navigator Staff Eugene Burrell. Burrell and his staff had conferences and events since the mid 1980’s that laid the foundation for the development of the Congress. In the 1970’s a movement of discipling gained strength on historically black Tuskegee and Howard Universities, and University of Illinois at Urbana.
Two and a half days before Palm Sunday 2008, 319 people converged on the historic Soul Saving Station Church in Harlem. They came to attend the New York Congress on Discipleship. God saw fit that this annual event -held in different cities -would impact more people than the organizers could have ever imagined. The attendees were bishops, pastors, church leaders, laypeople, educators, professionals, students, urban youth and adults, and military personnel. The common ground was a commitment to reaching into the urban communities of America to evangelize and disciple people for Christ.
Ninety-nine people attended this first conference sponsored by the Navigators and hosted by Rosedale Baptist Church. There were about six Navigator ministries who supported this event who make up the African American Network. Among these were Anglos ministering to African Americans and African Americans ministering to African Americans.
